Shiro dhara


Shiro dhara

'Shiras' means head and 'dhara' means a stream of liquid. It is the treatment wherein lukewarm medicated oil is made to flow at a slow consistent rate over the forehead of an individual for a particular duration. The stream of medicated oil falls on the glabellar region (between the eyebrows).

Procedure

A thin strip of cloth (varthi) is tied around the head just above the eyebrows. The medicated oil is kept in lukewarm condition inside a dhara vessel placed above the forehead of the individual lying face up on the paathy(massage table). Oil is made to flow from the vessel in a constant stream to the forehead, and from there to the scalp and hair. Gentle relaxing massage is also given.

Duration Of Therapy

The duration of treatment varies from 30 to 40 minutes as per the individual's condition. This treatment is done for 7 days, 14 days etc. as per the advice of the physician.

Ksheerabala tailam, Asana eladi tailam, Balaguluchyadi tailam, Chandanadi tailam etc. are some of the medicated oils used for Shiro dhara. According to the condition of the patient the doctor selects the appropriate medicated oil for treatment.
