Takra refers to buttermilk; thus takra dhara is the procedure whereby medicated buttermilk is poured over the forehead in a continuous stream. At times, takra dhara is done for the entire body too depending on the condition of the individual.
A thin strip of cloth (varthi) is tied around the head just above the eyebrows. Medicated butter milk is heated till it becomes lukewarm and is poured into the dhara vessel placed above the forehead of the individual lying supine on the paathy(massage table). The buttermilk is made to flow in a continuous stream from the vessel to the center of the forehead and from there to the scalp and hair. Simultaneously, a mild massage is given to the scalp and hair.
Duration Of Therapy
A treatment session lasts anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes depending upon the individual's condition.
Different herbs may be used for the preparation of medicated buttermilk according to the condition of the individual. It takes one day to prepare the medicated buttermilk.
